Where is location-based technology going?

Unsocial’s Project Specialist and general encyclopedia-of-knowledge-guy Brett Leverett has a few thoughts on the subject.

Let’s begin in your kitchen. New microprocessors are being developed that will not only be less expensive, but more energy efficient. They will use about one-third of the energy they currently do, being placed in anything that needs a computer board in order to operate…like that blender on your kitchen counter.

Brett describes that devices will have network cards that will connect to one another based on their location and will share processing power over a LAN, directing energy towards only one appliance at a time and saving incredible amounts of energy!

Cars have already begun to see the benefits of location-based technology advancements. Google’s robotic Toyota Priuses are revolutionizing automotive transportation, driving on roads and highways with only minimal human involvement. Location-based technology on the car includes a laser range finder mounted to the roof and sensors which provide a detailed map of the surrounding environment.

Brett says soon enough your car may be coming to you. Mobile applications will make it possible to communicate with your vehicle, picking you up where ever you are.

It’s all where location-based technology is going and just the beginning, says Brett.

Location-based networking is a way to discover and connect with the world around you.

Location-based networking has gained traction with the popularity of mobiles apps like Foursquare, Gowalla and Britekite that encourage mobile users to connect, share and “check-in” wherever they go in real-time.

The beauty of location-based networking is that it brings together members or users of a specific app based on where they are right now. The Unsocial mobile app connects users with business professionals in their proximity that they may not know, but NEED to know.

March in the Unsocial office is about understanding just exactly what location-based networking means. From what it is, where it’s going to how you can optimize your location-based network and how Unsocial can help you…it will all be answered!

Photo taken by Mike Haw

Tech industry events pride themselves on showcasing the future, but how can an event claim to be evidence for technological advancement when the event’s information is solely distributed in print?

The majority of tech conference and event goers will bring some form of smart phone or tablet with them. I know that I don’t always remember to bring my reusable bag to the grocery store, but my smart phone is an essential tool to my daily life which I struggle without. Why should event organizers spend unnecessary money on printed material when all of that information can be accessed through smart phones?

Print certainly still holds value, but everything that can be printed on a piece of paper can be shown on a high resolution screen (and be distrusted cheaper and more efficiently). Why not take a page out of the Consumer Electronic Show’s book?

The past two years, CES has offered an alternative to their printed material through a smart phone application called “Follow Me”. CES still provides printed material, but attendees at least have the option to go paperless.

Event specific applications, like “Follow Me”, provide attendees with all of the normally distributed material within the application along with digital material such as presentations. Providing your audience with an application also gives you the ability to revise information in real time. Reprinting 2,000 documents can become very costly and time consuming, but, in the essence of maintaining a professional appearance, that is sometimes the case. Venture Beat has a great article on how much paper is wasted at events and conferences.

Going mobile isn’t just simply being green. With an event application like Unsocial, your audience is provided a truly comprehensive experience. No longer do attendees need to carry around a backpack weighted down with print. Unsocial allows attendees to access the printed material, participate in polls, find out who else is attending through GPS, contact other attendees, distribute digital business cards, and follow the social media threads all from the comfort of their phone.

Paper still has its place for now, but the experience is simply less cumbersome for an attendee to have everything they want to know about the event contained conveniently in their pocket.

Vision presented their newest application today as part of the keynote remarks at the AT&T Developer Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Jason Terry application was developed using mainly HTML5, which allows the application to be easily transferred across smart phone platforms. HTML5 is widely regarded as the future of coding for applications due to its versatile capabilities.

Joe Tafoya, CEO of Viva! Vision, presented the Jason Terry application to over 2,000 attendees on the new HTC Jet Stream tablet. Joe demonstrated the capabilities of a variety of AT&T’s API’s including their billing and push notification features.

Other features of the application will include:

Auction: Users can exclusively bid on items being sold by Jason himself.

Photo Gallery: Personal and professional photos from Jason.

Video Gallery: Personal and professional videos from Jason.

Training Videos: Videos of Jason’s training regime are available for purchase.

Music: Downloadable songs by Jason’s record label, Tha Reason Records.

Foundation: A link to the Jason Terry Foundation is provided in-app.

Jet Hanger: Features descriptions of Jason’s favorite things, including cars, restaurants, movies, and more.

Jet Stream: An In-app messaging wall allows Users to communicate directly with Jason, as well as follow his Twitter feed.

About: Exclusive and in-depth content about Jason’s life and career that can’t be found anywhere else.

The demonstration focused on the capabilities of the application, but its unique User Interface turned some heads along the way as well. When opening the application, the User is presented with a professional basketball player’s locker. Each item shown in the locker represents a particular feature of the application, such as selecting the television takes the User to the Video feature.

While the launch date has yet to be revealed, the application will provide a unique experience for any fan of Jason Terry.

It is tough to imagine a better way to send off the historic Battersea Power Station than with the 2011 Power of One conference. The venue was nearly as inspiring as the series of thrilling sessions and panels geared towards entrepreneurs and developers.

Learning from the past, taking advice from leaders of the present, and looking towards the future laid a concrete platform for what has been a truly inspiring event.

What We Learned

Common mistakes made when starting a tech business

How to sell your idea to investors

Analysis of the recent history of technology

How to get your start-up media exposure

Analysis of the current trends in technology start-ups

Opinions on which technology trends investors will back

A whole heap of personal experience from people that have attempted to launch a tech business, some of which have even been very successful

Unsocial’s Impact

Kept Users on time and on track with our agenda and push notifications

Twitter feed with Rummble Labs integration provided User’s with intelligent and relevant Twitter posts about the event.

New connections were established thanks to our networking tool allowing Users to communicate in-app and set up meetings during the conference.

A more enjoyable conference where Unsocial proved itself to be a tool that makes business much easier.

A special thanks goes out to our partners, BlueVia and Rummble Labs, for making the Power of One such an inspiring event. Acknowledgement is also due to the winners of the banner competition, Intohand Ltd. and Amber Books Ltd., who proudly flew their banners during the 2011 Power of One.

Unsocial is the Official mobile app for the DECA West Regional Conference starting today in San Diego. The four-day conference brings together the brightest high school minds from across the Western United States as well as a small handful of neighboring countries. Over the next four days students will participate in competitions, seminars, teamwork & leadership skill building activities, networking, and student interaction.

With such a demanding conference schedule, Unsocial will help students manage their time by providing the agenda, venue map, speaker bios, and interactive networking with other attendees, all in the palm of their hand.

Main Events of the DECA Conference include:

Exciting Panels – Conversations with local industry leaders

Informative Workshops – Presentations by local industry leaders

DECA University – Career Development training where students can “major” in a specific industry (i.e. Marketing, Finance, Technology, etc.)

To better prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs, DECA is collaborating with Unsocial, a mobile networking tool for professionals to locate meaningful people around them – at conferences, events, airports, lobbies – and connect in real-time.

DECA Attendees become their own personal brand with Unsocial and can broadcast who they are and their business interests to people around them. Unsocial connects to your LinkedIn profile but only shares the information you want other conference attendees to see.

Unsocial aims to encourage and help students build their professional networks as they are venturing into the business world. By building their network at the beginning of their career, they will have a professional network they can rely on as they evolve through college, jobs, and life.
